Last July saw the two-year anniversary of the Gastro One and Memphis Gastroenterology Group merger. The group, operating under the name of Gastro One, has 34 physicians and three nurse practitioners delivering care in seven clinic locations and three endoscopy centers. With its increased size, Gastro One has been asked to collaborate with local hospitals, oncologists, and surgeons to provide comprehensive care for all types of colorectal, hepatobiliary, and pancreatic cancers.
Gastro One is an independent practice not owned or tied to any system, though its doctors have privileges at most local hospitals, including most area Baptist, Methodist, and Saint Francis hospitals. “Independence means the highest level of flexibility for our patients in terms of facilities, insurance, and choice,” says Michael S. Dragutsky, M.D., president and co-managing partner of Gastro One.
The majority of their procedures are performed in an ambulatory surgery center, assuring that the cost of the procedure is held to a minimum as measured against having the procedure performed in a hospital branded center. This is why Gastro One is a Tier 1 preferred site with many of the most common insurance plans.
Although it is the largest GI group in the Mid-South, and one of the largest in the country, instead of focusing on being bigger, Gastro One focuses on being better. The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy is the only national program recognizing quality and safety in the practice of GI endoscopy, and Gastro One is the only group in the Mid-South identified as a Quality Endoscopy Unit, recognized for its standards of excellence. All of Gastro One’s endoscopy centers are also accredited through the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc.
“We are honored to be the group of choice,” says Dr. Richard Aycock, senior vice president and co-managing partner. “This stronger practice means one stop for all gastro and digestive tract needs for people in the area and for referring physicians.”
